Itinerary:
DAY 1: PICK UP - Quito: You will be picked up from your hotel at the time imformed by our Operations department. Pickups will start at 6:10 am. ¬ 6:00/6:30: Depart from Quito, then you will take the new “Oriental” highway passing by Tambillo, Latacunga, Ambato, Baños, before arriving to Shell. ¬ 8:30: Box Lunch will be provided to every passenger. Short stops will be made during your trip in order to use toilets and to take pictures of the landscape (this aspect will depend on weather conditions). ¬ 11:00: Arrival to Shell.
You will be welcomed by our staff who will assist you in boarding the plane for the flight to Kapawi Ecolodge & Reserve. The flight from Shell is a 50 minute flight over miles and miles of unbroken pristine rainforest, arriving at the one of the Achuar community.
Upon arrival our guides will escort you on the final part of your journey, a beautiful 30 minute canoe ride into the majesty and tranquility of this remote part of the world.
Lunch at Kapawi Ecolodge & Reserve, Time to rest. In the afternoon explore the Kapawari river by Kayak and some lagoons near the lodge spotting the Pink river Dolphin. Swimming can be safely done in the Kapawari river. The water temperature is perfect and refreshing.
After dinner you have the option to enjoy a spectacular night walk to observe different kinds of inspect and amphibians found around the lodge.
DAY 2:
Early in the morning we will have the opportunity of finding and spotting great variety of birds found in the southeast Ecuadorian Rainforest.
Breakfast and departure for a full day activities where we meet the Pitzacocha trail where we learn about the forest and its benefits for the Achuar people, the guides will teach you about medicinal plants, hunting’s techniques and myths.
Picnic in the forest and visit one of the communities that surrounding the lodge. This is one of our most popular activities offered in Kapawi, because of the significant cultural contribution to the Achuar people. You will have the opportunity to see a community and its members and purchase some traditional handicrafts. Return to the lodge, dinner and a cultural activity (legends in hammock house, traditional greetings).
DAY 3:
Before the sun rises, about 4 am, you are invited to participate in the Wayusa Ceremony, which consist in drinking this tea (no side effects) and together with the Achuar you may interpret your dreams while enjoying the sunrise. Breakfast, blowgun contest, and departure to Coca.
After landing, about mid morning in Coca and airport procedures we will take you the Napo River´s port and will embark onto a comfortable covered motor boat. Here we start a canoe ride along the Napo river for about 2 hours approx, lunch box in route. After arriving at NWC’s entry dock we disembark for restroom then take a majestic and peaceful 1 to 2 hours dugout canoe ride surrounded by trees overhead, paddling along a narrow creek that connects to the lake where the lodge is located. Late afternoon arrival to the NWC lodge by the overwhelming view of the Añangu lake, welcome drink and facilities. On the ride from Coca to NWC we will explain the discovery of the Amazonas River, the town of Coca and the petroleum exploration.
DAY 4: After a buffet breakfast, experience the life above the forest floor visiting the 36 meter canopy tower. This tower is located about 20 minutes from the lodge deep within the forest.
Get a very good sample of the 567 species recorded so far, with a close look at colorful tanagers, macaws, toucans, flycatchers and even Spider or Howler Monkeys feeding themselves on the nearby trees. We will provide an explanation of the structure of the forest. The canopy tower opens a whole new world to the guests of the Napo Wildlife Center. Return to the lodge around 11:30 and lunch at 12:30.
The activity will start in the afternoon at 4:00 pm and will consist in the exploration of the “Cariañanagu Creek” for giant otters observation as wells as birds of the area. During this journey we will explain about the flooded and swamp forest; and the reason of why the rainforest is so diverse.
At 6:30 pm we will leave again to the lagoon to enjoy the sunset and begin with the caiman observation and other night creatures.
DAY 5: This morning we visit the best parrot clay licks in Ecuador!!! Early start and paddle downstream on the Añangu creek as far as the welcome area. Then, take the motor boat for a 10 minute ride for a wonderful view of thousands of parrots such as Amazon-Mealy, blue-headed, orange –cheek, among others, landing on the earth to eat the clay. Later, back to the welcome area and a short hike to the parakeets’ clay lick, where hundreds of cobalt-winged parakeets remain on the top of the trees searching for the best time to eat the salts, chemicals and minerals contained in the organic matter. Lunch in the welcome area. The return to the lodge could be by canoe or waking by the Napo Trail depending of passenger desires. Optional: Between the visits to the clay licks we could stop at the local community and learn about the different projects with emphasis in improving the quality of life of the community such as: school, medical center or the women´s organization. During this visit you will learn about the difference in the Runa Napo culture or Kichwas and the Achuar. Specially the Añangu Community from where and when they came.
At night once we return to the lodge we could have a night hike by the Tucan Trail.
DAY 6:
Early breakfast, and last excursion canoeing back to the Napo river, the creek may reveal new sights of Giant otters, Monk Saki monkeys, hoatzins, blackcapped donacobius or other birds. The motorized canoe will return you back to Coca, for the flight back to Quito.
