The Achuar are a collective, ancient and self-sufficient nation of people settled in their ancestral territory in the current Ecuadorian provinces of Pastaza and Morona Santiago.
The Achuar have ancestral systems of social, economic, cultural and political organization that have allowed them to survive in an autonomous manner. These systems of organization have been developed over generations and have been inherited from Achuar ancestors who have inhabited their territories for centuries.
The Achuar are very clear that in their vision they do not want any extractive activity in their territory that threatens the destruction of their land and their culture. They want to preserve and be the custodians of their land and culture for their future generations and live in a sustainable way.
Some of the goals of the Achuar Nation are:
- To exercise self-determination;
- To exercise the collective rights established by the political Constitution of the Ecuadorian State and by Agreement 169 of the International Labor Organization, as well as by other national and international legislation;
- To recapture, entitle, administer and preserve the totality of their ancestral land;
- To decide the use, administration and conservation of the natural resources that lie within their territory;
- To administer cultural and historical heritage;
- To retrieve, maintain, value and defend ancestral identity, including: language, customs, sciences and technologies;
- To coordinate and manage the actions of the Achuar communities;
- To manage the education and training of the community members;
- To promote and defend unity, solidarity, and respect among the constituents of the communities as well as among the rest of the peoples and nations joining with the Achuar's goals;
- To establish relations and exchanges with indigenous peoples and nations, as well as with public and private entities, on a provincial, regional, national and international level;
- To have official representatives in public and private bodies on a local, provincial, regional, national and international scale;
- To fortify intercultural education;
- To find sustainable economic alternatives, such as Ecotourism and to prepare to manage our projects.
