Kapawi isn’t just for kids—it’s an inspiring destination for families with teens and adults looking to reconnect, recharge, and explore together. Shared adventure, cultural exchange, and deep immersion in nature offer powerful family bonding experiences. Kapawi offers families the option to design customized itineraries, all with a private guide and curated activities. Kapawi offers many options to explore the forest, enjoy several boat and kayak explorations of the rivers around the area, as well as visit the local Achuar communities. The Achuar culture is based on dreams and visions. The Achuar start the day very early, 3-4 am, drinking wayus tea. Wayus is a tea from a native plant, Ilex guayusa, that contains caffeine and antioxidant properties. This is how the Achuar begin every day, drinking Wayus to cleans the spirit and share dreams, and this is also how the day starts at Kapawi Ecolodge, in our hearth hut by the Capahuari river sharing Wayus with the Achuar hosts.
Where does the food at Kapawi come from? Are there vegetarian/vegan menus? All meals and ingredients are Ecuadorian and the menu we provide to guests includes a combination of Achuar, Amazonian, and Ecuadorian dishes. Kapawi can cater to any diet, including vegetarian and vegan requirements. The Achuar are people of the Ajá (Ah-Ha), or family garden. Visitors will visit the Achuar communities and families, and learn from them about the daily garden and practices, the most common plants used in subsistence agriculture and local medicine, and will learn from them about local gastronomy. Sharing a meal prepared in the firepit with an Achuar host family is one of the highlights of every visit to Kapawi. The ecolodge works with the communities surrounding the lodge to purchase as many local products as possible. Local production is based on the traditional (chacra) system, which means that each family harvests its own farm.
What kind of wildlife can a visitor expect to see at Kapawi? Kapawi was designed as a project to help protect emblematic Amazonian wildlife, and it has a natural preserve of over 2,500 hectares around the lodge, and a wider area of influence that covers more than 20,000 hectares and 4 navigable rivers. Emblematic fauna is present all around, with some species commonly observed, including: pink river dolphins, 7 species of primates (red howler, dusky titi, squirrel, capuchin, tamarin, pigmy marmoset, and night monkeys), capybaras, river turtles, cayman, and many species of birds (Kapawi’s list has more than 500 species of birds), amphibians, and insects. Jaguars and felines are present (as captured in our camera traps), although they are not easy to spot. Other emblematic species, such as giant river otters, harpy eagles, tapir, wild boar, and others, are also present in the area. Kapawi can customized special wildlife adventures that will allow a visitor to explore the forest deeper in search of wildlife encounters and opportunities.
